ABOUT
SAILING PHOTOS
In my book The Habit Trap, I write about a sailing trip I took from Norway to the Faroe Islands. That trip was all about escaping my daily routines and trying something new, and it confirmed for me the power of challenging ourselves with unfamiliar experiences. It's the most fun, rewarding thing I've done in years.

01
Hjellestad, Norway
With Isbjørn the evening before my crewmates and I set sail for the Shetlands.

02
Day 1
We encountered the roughest seas of the trip during our first day and night out of Norway.

03
Sunset on the North Sea
Note the cargo ship in the distance. We'd have a more eventful encounter with one of these the following night, as I describe in my book.

04
Lerwick
A quick selfie as we motored into the town of Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. The trip was organized by 59º North Sailing, and the experience was first-rate from start to finish.

05
Watchmates
Me and my watchmate, Ken Cascio, a great guy and an experienced sailor who kept me from screwing up too badly.

06
Captain Jon
Jon Amtrup, our skipper, at the helm as we approached the Faroe Islands.

07
Sailing the Faroes
Our first of five days exploring the Faroes.

08
Oops
I managed to snag my PFD's ripcord on the mast as we lowered the mainsail, to everyone's amusement.

09
The Faroes
Pictures don't do these islands justice.

10
My Crew
The six of us on Day 3 of our Faroes exploration. I couldn't have asked to sail with a better group of people.

11
A True Escape
As I put it in my book, my time aboard Isbjørn renewed my sense of the grandness of life and the wide-open possibility it offers us if we’re willing to leave our comfort zones.
